Diffusion on Rapidly Varying Surfaces

چکیده

Lateral diffusion of particles along interfaces is a frequently occurring phenomenon in cellular biology. The mobility of membrane proteins has far-reaching implications for many cellular processes, in particular protein transport, signalling and morphology, thus there has been considerable interest in measuring how the mobility of these proteins is affected by the membrane and its surrounding environment. In this talk, I will describe a multi-scale analysis approach to studying the macroscopic behaviour of passive particles diffusing laterally on such surfaces. In particular, I will demonstrate how this approach allows one to compute effective properties of the macroscopic diffusion as well as provide a means to rigorously justify a number of existing results.

Two-Dimensional Diffusion of Prodan on Self-Assembled Monolayers Studied by Fluorescence Recovery after Photobleaching

Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) is used to determine diffusion constants for the dye molecule 6-propionyl-2-dimethylaminonaphthalene (prodan) on silica and on a variety of organic monolayers grafted onto silica. Similar diffusion constants of ∼2 × 10-7 cm2/s are found for prodan on chlorotrimethylsilane (CTS) based self-assembled monolayers and on silanated poly(ethylene glyco...

Heterogeneous Multiscale FEM for Diffusion Problems on Rough Surfaces

We present a finite element method for the numerical solution of diffusion problems on rough surfaces. The problem is transformed to an elliptic homogenization problem in a two dimensional parameter domain with a rapidly oscillating diffusion tensor and source term. The finite element method is based on the heterogeneous multiscale methods of E and Engquist [Commun. Math. Sci., 1 (2003), pp. 87...

Diffusion of hard disks and rodlike molecules on surfaces.

We study the submonolayer diffusion of hard disks and rodlike molecules on smooth surfaces through numerical simulations and theoretical arguments. We concentrate on the behavior of the various diffusion coefficients as a function of the two-dimensional (2D) number density rho in the case where there are no explicit surface-particle interactions. For the hard disk case, we find that while the t...

First - principles study of adsorption and diffusion on Ge / Si ( 001 ) - ( 2 · 8 ) and Ge / Si ( 105 ) - ( 1 · 2 ) surfaces

Using first-principles total-energy calculations, we have investigated the adsorption and diffusion of Si and Ge adatoms on Ge/ Si(001)-(2 · 8) and Ge/Si(105)-(1 · 2) surfaces. The dimer vacancy lines on Ge/Si(001)-(2 · 8) and the alternate SA and rebonded SB steps on Ge/Si(105)-(1 · 2) are found to strongly influence the adatom kinetics. On Ge/Si(001)-(2 · 8) surface, the fast diffusion path i...

INFLUENCE OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL POTENTIAL ON ENERGY LANDSCAPES NEAR STEP AND ISLAND EDGES: Ag(100) and Ag(111)

The electrochemical cell offers the promise of enabling controlled alteration of the morphology and islanding phenomena on metallic surfaces. Different diffusion processes near step and island edges are known to profoundly affect the growth mode, island sizes, island shapes and step morphology. Using the surface-embedded-atom-model (SEAM) modified for the electrolytic environment, we calculate ...
